A French drain is one of the most effective and widely used drainage systems for managing water around and beneath residential foundations. Despite the name, it has nothing to do with France — it is named after Henry French, who popularized the concept in the 1800s.
A French drain is simply a trench filled with gravel and a perforated pipe. Water naturally flows downhill and into the path of least resistance. The gravel allows water to flow freely into the trench, where the perforated pipe collects it and channels it to a discharge point — typically a sump pump pit inside your basement or a daylight outlet outside.
Interior French drains are installed along the perimeter of your basement floor, just inside the foundation walls. The floor is cut along the edge, a trench is excavated, gravel and pipe are laid, and the floor is patched with new concrete. This system catches water that seeps in through the floor-to-wall joint or rises through the slab from hydrostatic pressure below.
Exterior French drains are installed in a trench dug around the outside of your foundation. They intercept groundwater before it reaches the foundation walls. Exterior drains are more invasive to install because they require excavation, but they address water at the source.
You likely need a French drain if you have water seeping in along the base of your basement walls, standing water on your basement floor after rain, or hydrostatic pressure pushing water up through floor cracks. French drains are often part of a complete waterproofing system that includes a sump pump and vapor barrier.
Installation of an interior French drain typically takes one to three days depending on basement size. The process involves cutting the floor, excavating the trench, laying gravel and pipe, connecting to the sump pit, and patching the floor. A quality installation uses commercial-grade perforated pipe and washed stone for maximum drainage capacity.
At SuperDry Basements, our French drain systems are designed to handle the heaviest Michigan rainstorms. We use oversized pipe, clean washed stone, and proper pitch to ensure water flows efficiently to your sump pump. Every system comes with our lifetime transferable warranty.
